THE ROOT OF ANGER

By "Rebekah" the Bride
 (Genesis 4:1-8) =20

(Jn.1:29; 6:28,29; Rev. 5:12; Eph.2:8,9; Gen.3:1-6; Lu.15:25-32)

Oh, where does anger come from, when did anger get its start?
It's obvious that anger dwells within the human heart.
Look at the world around you and see anger on display.
What's at the root of anger that some deal with every day?

The first display of anger's in the Bible, you will see.
This anger led to murder, the first murder it would be.
It was when Cain slew Abel as they both were in the field;
An awful act of violence when to anger Cain did yield.

Cain's first display of anger was before that awful day.
He'd brought to God an offering and expected Him to say:
"I'm so pleased with your offering, I accept it, yes, I do;
You've worked to grow your offering and I am so pleased with you."

Cain worked hard in his garden growing fruit, the work he knew.
He'd labored to be pleasing to the Lord with what he grew.
To his surprise, his offering did not get the Lord's respect.
God told Cain, "No, your offering, I just really can't accept!"

Then Cain got very angry, it was anger's first display.
He'd tried so hard to please God with his offering that sad day.
And therein lay the problem: Cain was trying hard to earn
Acceptance from his Maker which he couldn't, he would learn.

His younger brother Abel also came to God that day.
He'd brought a lamb, his offering, and to him the Lord did say:
"I do respect your offering, it's the one I asked you for;
You've not worked for acceptance and on you I'll mercy pour."

The lamb was what God wanted for it symbolized God's Son.
Christ was God's Lamb, an offering, who would die for everyone.
God's pleased when we come to Him, not like Cain with works in hand;
But through the Lamb, Christ Jesus, just like Abel, as God planned.

God said, "Cain, go obey Me, just come to Me the right way;
But Cain was still so angry, he refused again that day.
"Oh, can't I ever please You!" was the deep cry of Cain's heart.
I worked so hard to do that and from that I won't depart!

That anger led to murder, Cain killed Abel, scriptures say.
His anger toward his Maker was what led to that display.
He could not earn God's favor though he tried with heart and soul;
And here's what caused that anger: Cain could not be in control!

Inherited from Adam, just like Cain, we have one, too:
A carnal human nature, a controlling one, it's true.
To play god comes so natural, in control we like to be;
And when we can't there's anger just like Cain's-that's you and me!

We like to have control of our relationship with God.
We want to earn His favor and have Him our works applaud.
But God won't let us do that, for His favor can't be won.
His favor comes to all those who come to Him through His Son.

So that's where anger comes from, from our need to have control;
Like Cain who couldn't have that and had anger in his soul.
So if you want to take a course in anger-management,
Relate to God, not through your works, but through Christ whom God sent.
