"You're full of cares, you're troubled so, Dear Martha, yes, it's true; But just one thing is needful now, One needful thing to do." *** What troubled her? What bothered her? She toiled so anxiously! "It is," she said, "that Mary's left The serving all to me." Her sister, Mary, just sat down At Jesus' feet that day, And listened to the words He spoke, To hear truth He'd convey. *** It seemed that Mary should have helped Her sister Martha out. At least, to Martha, that seemed true; She felt that way, no doubt. "Oh, tell her, Jesus," Martha said, "To come help me serve You. I'm burdened down with all this work That I have here to do." *** But Jesus saw things differently As He spoke back to say: "You're troubled and you're full of cares; It's not the needful way. Your sister Mary's serving Me, Though she's not helping you. To sit and listen to Me=20 Is the needful thing to do." *** Dear Mary's way just fed the Lord; It fed His heart that day. It's how she best could serve Him then; It was the needful way. She'd really chosen that good part No one could take from her; And, really, she was serving Christ The way He did prefer. *** Among the lilies, Jesus feeds; It's where He loves to be. The lily doesn't toil or spin Like Martha did, you see. As Mary sat at Jesus' feet, And listened with her heart, She was a "lily" child of God; She'd chosen that good part. *** It's not the only way to serve, Just sitting at Christ's feet, And focusing on Him within, His presence just to seek; But it is needful, Jesus says, It's service at its best. Then other things I do for Him Will all be done in rest. *** To spend some time with Christ each day, Just listening for His voice, It feeds my Lord, it surely does; It's really a good choice. It's such a blessed way to serve; Like Mary I can be.
