That Ointment's name is Jesus Christ; His love sent from above. True wholeness for the human race Is offered through His love. *** We must have love, it is a need Each one has here on earth. Yes, love is what we're looking for; It's our goal right from birth. But our soul needs a special love To fill that inner need. Not human love, that's not the kind; For our soul it won't feed. *** Now, human love is wonderful, And fortunate are we If we have that, we are so blessed, To be loved humanly. But we've a soul that has a need That human love can't fill. A human love can't meet that need; Just know it never will. *** You may have love from family, And friends from near or far. Or, perhaps, you've really helped mankind; The world knows who you are. You may have fans, adoring ones, Who love the things you do; But that love cannot take the place Of Jesus' love for you. *** Perhaps your life, right from its start, Has been an awful one. Abuse, rejection's all you've known; Bad things to you've been done. This love of Christ can swallow up This darkness in your life, And set you free entirely From all past fear and strife. *** This love of Christ was shown upon The cross of Calvary, When Jesus sacrificed His life And died for you and me. He was the willing sacrifice For the whole human race. Our punishment, God placed on Him, And we're saved by His grace. *** This love's a gift we can receive, Which heals our sin sick soul. Jesus, the Balm in Gilead, Can make each of us whole. This gift of love, it can't be earned; The problem lies therein: Our human nature thinks it needs To earn this love from Him. *** Yes, human pride, it is a snare That keeps this love from us. This want to earn, it's so ingrained; God's mercy some don't trust. Unmerited, God's favor is; Oh, won't you just believe? This gift of love, this healing Balm: No earning, just receive. *** Oh, what an Ointment for the soul, One like you've never known. This Balm in Gilead is yours; Yes, it is yours to own. God made you just so that He'd have Someone that He could love. Just come to Him, let Him apply This Salve I'm speaking of. *** Don't settle just for human love; That love can't touch the soul. There is a Balm in Gilead,
An Ointment for the soul;
A Salve God can apply to us
To make each of us whole.
That Ointment’s name is Jesus Christ;
His love sent from above.
True wholeness for the human race
Is offered through His love.

We must have love, it is a need
Each one has here on earth.
Yes, love is what we’re looking for;
It’s our goal right from birth.
But our soul needs a special love
To fill that inner need.
Not human love, that’s not the kind;
For our soul it won’t feed.

Now, human love is wonderful,
And fortunate are we
If we have that, we are so blessed,
To be loved humanly.
But we’ve a soul that has a need
That human love can’t fill.
A human love can’t meet that need;
Just know it never will.

You may have love from family,

You may have fans, adoring ones,
