HARVEST TIME IN CHURCHES

By "Rebekah" the Bride

***
"My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness,"
My favorite hymn of old does say.
It's still appropriate today.
"Just as I am, without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me,"
This other hymn of old is true,
Is true right now for me--you, too.
***
I went to church when I was young;
These were the hymns that I heard sung.
But yet in me they took no root;
In my young life they bore no fruit.
I sang these words yet never heard;
Back then they weren't to me God's word.
My church sang them so faithfully;
Yet, they were not alive in me.
***
And then one day, in church, I heard;
This hymn became a living word:
"When I survey the wondrous cross,"
And then it told about the loss
Of Christ's life on the cross for me,
So from my sin I'd be set free.
And then at last truth was revealed;
Then my heart to the Lord did yield.
***
It really is a mystery;
Why did I take so long to see
What Christ's death really meant for me
As He hung there on Calvary?
This was my harvest time, I know.
In God's truth I began to grow.
Those hymns I sang when I was young
Now came alive as they were sung.
***
The church has many just like me
Who go on Sunday faithfully.
They sing the same hymns that I did;
Yet, living truth from them is hid.
The hymns of old you've listened to,
Have they yet taken root in you?
Or are you really just like me,
Who sat in church, but did not see?
***
So many sitting in church pews
Who've never really heard the news
Deep down within their heart and soul
That Christ has died to make them whole.
But if they have a love for truth,
The hymns they heard in church as youth
Will someday in their hearts ring true.
A harvest in them God will do.
***
Oh, look for some within the church
To really start to make a search
For truth and God's reality,
And then they'll be a lot like me.
They'll come alive, at last, you'll see.
The Lord to them so real will be;
And some who sat so long in pews,
Will finally God's salvation choose!
