THE GREATEST WORK

By "Rebekah" the Bride

(Jn. 6:28-29; 16:8-9; Rom. 6:23; 1 Jn. 5:13;
Ps. 139:1-18; 2 Cor. 5:21; Isa. 64:6; Col. 1:20)

***
Our Lord was asked a question while on this earth He walked:
"What works can we do for our God?" men asked Him as they talked.
They must have been surprised when Jesus said what they should do:
"This is the work: believe on Me, the work God has for you."
***
They probably expected Christ to list a lot of things:
"Do this and this and don't do that," hard work and sufferings.
But when He said, "Believe on Me, that's all God wants of you,"
they must have been amazed to hear that's all they had to do.
***
What is this single task that God asks of the human race:
believe on Christ, the One He sent to us in time and space?
It doesn't seem like that's a work, to only just believe;
the gift of God-eternal life-by faith to just receive.
***
But, yet, it is the most important work you'll ever do;
to just believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for you.
The Bible says the greatest sin is unbelief, you know-
to not believe in Christ, the Lord, as we walk here below.
***
Now, after you've believed that Christ took all your sins away,
you've only just begun the work, this work's for every day.
While you're still here upon the earth, by faith you need to walk.
To keep believing is a work that you should never stop.
***
If you're a Christian and you're asked, "Will you to heaven go?"
and you say, "...Well...I'm hoping to...," you really ought to know
that you're not doing that great work our Savior told us to;
for if you were, you'd say, "Of course, because of Christ it's true."
***
God purchased us at quite a cost, His Son's death was the price.
It means we must be worth a lot for Him to offer Christ.
If Christians think they're valuable because of things they do,
it shows they are not doing the great work they've been called to.
***
God placed our sins upon His Son and, in exchange, He gave
the righteousness of Christ to you when your soul He did save.
But if self-righteousness you build by good works that you do,
the work of God to which you're called will not be done by you.
***
What Jesus did upon the cross gives peace from God to you.
It is a gift you have not earned, do you believe that's true?
When Christians think God's mad at them it really shows that they
aren't doing the believing work they're called to do each day.
***
Oh, Christian, do you do the work to which you have been called?
And do you really know this work's the greatest work of all?
To just believe Christ's done it all for us at Calvary,
to make the way for us to be with Him eternally.
