His thoughts and our thoughts differ so; Like night and day-ours need to go, And be replaced by His alone. In us, His thoughts should make their home. *** The motives for the things you do, God really wants to show to you. His word is like a light to shine On hidden motives, yours and mine. The thoughts and intents of the heart, His light shines on them to impart The truth God wants revealed inside; Those motives we may want to hide. *** Some good things that we Christians do May look so right-ones done by you. Outward appearance can seem right, But what if God should shine His light Upon your motives deep inside, So that from them you could not hide? And what if you were shocked to see That yours with God do not agree? *** One thing God showed me, deep inside- A truth from which I now don't hide- That I wanted so desperately To earn His love, His love for me. Although I'd been saved a long time, These were subconscious ways of mine That came from thoughts, ones I should spurn; For God's love I can never earn. *** To think some good things that I did, Were done with motives that were hid. I really was surprised to learn That I was trying hard to earn. My true intents that were inside, From them I could no longer hide. To try to earn love from my God Is carnal action, oh, so flawed! *** But, clearly, with my conscious mind, To this truth I was not that blind. I knew God's love for me is free, And never can be earned by me. But carnal thoughts hid inside me With conscious thoughts did not agree; And so God, with His two-edged sword, Worked inside me-oh, thank you, Lord! *** So many of us, faithfully, Work in our church so endlessly. We take communion, fast and pray, And read our Bibles every day. We tithe our income, witness, too, And use our gifts, we gladly do. But can these works withstand God's test? Our motivations, are they best? *** What if your Lord revealed to you That motives for these things you do Are works to earn your righteousness, So God-and people-you'll impress? You might say, "No! That is not true! I know that's something I don't do!" Or would you say, "If that is so, I'm willing to let that sin go"? *** Yes, that is sin, it really is, To trust your righteousness, not His; For on the cross Christ died, it's true, To GIVE His righteousness to you. You cannot add to that, you know; A gift is free, that's always so. God WILL NOT let you add onto The righteousness Christ gave to you! *** Some painful things that you go through May be allowed by God for you, To show you this truth deep within; So healing there He can begin. Be willing to let go of pride, If you've this problem deep inside- This sin of working hard to earn, That God's two-edged sword can discern. *** Subconscious motives, too long hid, Your Lord longs now to make you rid.
